About Danish Sheikh

I am an activist-lawyer, playwright, and lecturer at the La Trobe Law School. My research focuses on the legal regulation of sexuality and gender identity, and conversely, how queer persons reshape the law through creative forms of resistance. My approach to these questions draws upon socio-legal research and theatre and performance studies. A parallel strand of my research explores legal pedagogy and legal method, examining the training we offer in the law school through the methods and materials that we use to teach and to write, and how we might approach that training differently. I am invested in generating impactful writing and research that makes contact and stimulates conversation across disciplines, geographies, and communities. My first book, Love and Reparation, restaged the Section 377 litigation in India, blending courtroom transcripts with archival research and personal memoir. My research has been cited by the Supreme Court of India its decision to decriminalise homosexuality and has also won multiple awards, including the Law, Literature and Humanities Association of Australasia’s Early Career Researcher Article Prize in 2023 and the Melbourne Law School Graduate Student Research Prize in 2022.
