About Dan Singleman
For 15 years I was fortunate to work in different parts of the world and different investment teams. Much of my time was with BNP Paribas Asset Management where I was most recently a Senior Portfolio Manager within global fixed income. For those not familiar that means bonds from governments and corporates ranging from low risk to high risk. My daily responsibilities included developing macro strategy, implementation of investment themes, portfolio optimization techniques, monitoring and reporting market risks for client portfolios. If all of that is over your head or you’re not that into investing in financial markets I can distill it down into a 5 step plan that is applicable to any scenario.1) Analysis (an idea, a theme, research)2) What instrument will positively benefit from your analysis3) How much of your capital should you invest? Size of the position.4) Trading execution (who and how)5) Risk management (how does it interact with other things in your portfolio) a. Go back to step 1 and make sure it is still applicableCongratulations, you are now a portfolio manager :DBesides managing capital for clients, I have managed projects, teams, and individuals across geographic time zones, and cultural differences. My most recent project was working with quantitative analysts, data scientists, engineers, and developers to improve the portfolio optimization process. The goal of the project was to optimize steps 2 and 3 of the investment process above. The role taught me a lot about keeping innovation ideas simple. Getting to the result required milestone check-ins and of course meetings. Doesn’t everyone love those! In order to optimize our time my meetings tried to adhere to one, or multiple, reasons for attending.1) Sharing of information2) Seeking input3) Taking a decisiona. We would end the meeting with, Who will do what by when?I perform at my best when creativity and innovation are encouraged and rewarded. It is important for me to have a sense of autonomy and freedom giving me a sense of control over my work. I value when I contribute towards a team project especially when I can teach and educate others. Most importantly I like to socialize, laugh, and have fun with my colleagues.Lately I’ve been learning more about blockchain technologies and how they can help expand financial resources. I am most interested in how it can help underserved people and communities across the world. My top strengths are; Strategic, Relator, Self-Assurance, Futuristic, and Responsibility. I also like riding my gravel bikes.
