About Dan Gaffney

Author, psychotherapist, public affairs specialist, palliative care advocate.I've achieved 3 important goals in the past 5 years. I successfully advocated for the funding of a new palliative care unit at Nepean Hospital in Sydney's west; published a book about living and dying well; and refreshed my therapeutic skills by completing a graduate diploma of counselling. These achievements complement a career in public health, news media, public affairs and the higher education sector. My writing has been published and broadcasted widely, including in The Australian, The Weekend Australian, Australian Doctor, Hospitals and Aged Care, The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, The Australian Journal of Public Health, Sydney Alumni Magazine, and ABC Radio National. Over the past 20 years I have mentored groups about how to live and die more mindfully. My interest in writing about what it means to die well was sharpened a decade ago when I was diagnosed with cancer.Journey Home is my first book.

Finding Space Nov 2024 - Present

I take a ‘human-centred approach’ that draws on a range of cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBT) that help to recognise unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns. It’s based on the idea that one’s thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected and affect each other. CBT informs many useful approaches that are effective for people with a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, intrusive thoughts, post-traumatic stress, sleep issues, and addictive behaviours.

While many of us fear death and dying, these essays argue that embracing these events can help us reclaim a richness we’re denied in a death-phobic culture. What’s more, opening our hearts can help us celebrate the preciousness of life and craft a life-affirming legacy for our families and loved ones.
