The aims of the project were to develop the existing physics model to include electromagnetic effects and to explore the how these changes affect simulation results. My work focused around the STORM physics module for the BOUT++ plasma simulation framework. STORM uses a fluid model for describing plasmas within the Scrape-Off Layer of a tokamak, which couples fluid equations and electromagnetic equations. I extended this model theoretically to evolve new fields and implemented it using available numerical methods suitable for computational fluid dynamic problems.I have also been running simulations with the model using high performance computing, using local and international facilities such as the MARCONI supercomputer. This involves parameter scans and exploring new regimes to understand the physics of the new model. In order to make sense of the data produced by the simulation, I have developed post-processing routines to extract and display useful information from the output. This includes displaying sections of raw data in a human-friendly manner as well as measuring properties of the simulated system. Show less

Working in local schools to provide support in classrooms predominantly at GCSE level, covering science and mathematics to improve attainment and inspire the students about attending university.I received training to work with the school children and was situated in two schools each week for three hours at a time. Roles would include helping teachers during practical experiments and moving around the classroom giving one to one help as needed.

I was trained as a Supervised Duty Operator in which I would spend several shifts a week maintaining the Vulcan laser and delivering laser pulses subject to the users' requirements, working within the laser areas and the control room.Within the laser areas I also designed and built an upgraded laser diagnostics package, as well as a new beamline for testing new theory and developments.Most of my time was spent developing new software and performing statistical analysis. Software ranged from data aggregation and display to simulations of ultra-intense laser pulses. I learnt several new languages to accomplish this - VB.NET, R and C++. Show less
