In my role as director of engineering at Kong, I led the teams responsible for the development and operation of our SaaS platform, Konnect. At various times this included both the software engineering teams developing the product, as well as the SRE team that built the Kubernetes-based container platform on AWS to host it. My scope also included some services provided to the rest of Kong: Security and Compliance, Quality Engineering, and Engineering Enablement (an internally-facing DevOps enablement team).

Slalom is a full-service consulting firm oriented around a local market model. In my time in Slalom's Detroit market I launched our Technology Enablement practice, and built it from the ground up as a highly-profitable engineering consulting practice with focus areas in Software Engineering, Agile Product Delivery, Cloud & DevOps, and Enterprise Architecture.Some high points:- As a hands-on hiring manager, built the team from 1 to over 50 engineers, product managers, and architects- Launched 4 practice areas: Software Engineering, Cloud/DevOps, Enterprise Architecture & Systems Integration, and Agile Product Delivery- Developed or hired leaders for each of our practice areas- Consistently exceeded financial objectives for the practice, achieving a ~$25M ARR in 2020 (up from ~$0 in 2017)

RightBrain is a boutique cloud technology, application development, and devops consulting firm. As CTO, I directed technical strategy and execution for our three engineering teams. This involved a combination of standard Agile engineering practices like standups and retros, developing our engineering directors, architecture review, and client-facing consulting.

Deepfield is a network analytics startup founded by technologists with a deep Internet pedigree going back to NSFNet days.During my time here, I helped the company grow and diversify its customer base, product offerings, and engineering team. After taking ownership of Systems Engineering, I aggressively recruited to build several high-functioning teams providing technical support, production operations, systems & network design, and engineering/automation tools development.During my tenure here, we accomplished a lot. Some examples:- Rollout of a new monitoring and alerting solution based on collectd/statsd, with an internally developed stream analysis platform.- Implementation of Dockerized developer environments, improving dev productivity and massively reducing effort for environment management.- Adoption of semantic versioning discipline with feature branching

I had the privilege to build and lead an international team of highly professional and dedicated systems engineers at MuleSoft. The DevOps team designed, implemented and managed all of our critical infrastructure systems. This included the generation and maintenance of production and development environments (AWS), monitoring and alerting systems (Zabbix/New Relic/Pingdom/Pagerduty), CI/CD services (Jenkins/Bamboo/Nexus/...), configuration management (SaltStack), and core host master services like DNS. We also owned the InfoSec role in the Engineering department, and contributed to product features by providing subject matter expertise, systems design, and, in some cases, implementation.Our work was a careful balancing act between infrastructure investment, incident response and change management. Under my leadership, we successfully released several new SaaS products while at the same time maintaining rigorous uptime SLAs and completing SSAE 16 SOC1 & 2, HITRUST, and PCI certifications.

Working at Netflix was a great chance to learn how a leader in the distributed public cloud space manages their infrastructure, from the inside. I was one of the first hires into the Cloud Operations & Reliability Engineering (CORE) team, created to provide systems architecture and reliability expertise to the many development teams in the product organization.While working on CORE, I learned my current language-of-choice, Python, and used my new knowledge first to support and add features to our internally developed alerting gateway, and later to develop various operations-oriented tools, as well as mentoring more junior developers. I also participated in an on-call rotation, performed or guided root cause analysis (RCA) investigations, debugged persistent infrastructure and network abnormalities, and contributed to the development of the new team.

At Domino's Pizza, I lead a great team of engineers responsible for operations and support of Domino's online ordering solution. Together, we built out the private cloud application environments for DPZ's online ordering reimplementation, culminating in a successful (zero downtime) launch. Following the launch, we implemented a red-black deployment regimen and eventually-consistent cross-datacenter noSQL synchronization to ensure that we always had a fallback plan, because when you're operating at the sales volumes that Domino's online service does (>$1B in 2012), the CEO gets annoyed when it goes down.Of course, we also provided services like production incident call leadership, application architecture review and bug/bottleneck analysis with the platform engineering team, release coordination, and a bunch of other stuff that we now commonly bundle under 'DevOps'.
