Graduate Research Associate At Michigan Value Collaborative

Ann Arbor, Mi, Us

The Michigan Value Collaborative is a Blue Cross Blue Shield funded Collaborative Quality Improvement program focused on the intersection of quality and cost efficiency. I participated in various projects related to the implementation of a P4P measure used by Blue Cross to allocate $20 million to hospitals across the state. I developed action plan templates that hospitals utilized to identify root causes, resources used, and specific measurable goals for 2 service lines selected for quality improvement. My primary project was the development of Peer-to-Peer hospital workgroups to facilitate collaboration between hospitals on relevant clinical topics. The workgroups were created with two goals in mind: increase knowledge in the selected topic by providing a highly-accessible platform, and facilitate long-term collaboration and increased participation in the workgroups with high-value and highly accessible materials and activities. I am studying the effectiveness of the workgroups in achieving those two goals, and there have been workgroups on three different topics so far: congestive heart failure readmission reduction, post acute care strategies following joint replacement, and a workgroup specifically for rural hospitals. The workgroup model can as a foundational and easily replicated strategy to improve regional and national collaboration in healthcare.Poster Presentation:Daniel Thomas, Chad Ellimoottil, Maya Peters, Kristyn Vermeesch, Jim Dupree (2016). "Using Peer-to-Peer Workgroups to Disseminate Best Practices for CHF Readmission Reduction". Ann Arbor Health Services Research Symposium.
