By refactoring the backend of a pre-existing application, I stress-tested the database, created indexes, shortened url links, etc. in order to optimize database query speed from 2,973ms to 15ms per 1000 clients per second. Subsequently deployed the service to an AWS EC2 instance, then repopulated the database from 100 records to 10 million records to further stress-test the app’s functionality under high user activity.Using NginX, I created a reverse-proxy server and horizontally scaled the service to use 2 additional servers, balanced the load using Round Robin, and cached results to increase my throughput from 536 requests per second, to 1,777 rps, and decreased my latency/error rate from originally 45.6% to 0.0%In comparison to the legacy code, my optimizations decreased the database response time by over 2000%, granting the ability to maintain an RPS of 14ms with 1,000 get requests per second with 0.0% errors.
