My group used data science to model player behavior and motivations. By leveraging statistical inference techniques and social science theories to make sense of data collected inside and outside of games, we provided concrete recommendations to production teams to help designers maximize player engagement and retention.

My PARC research focused on the social dynamics of massively multiplayer online games and virtual worlds: I founded the PlayOn project, which conducted the longest and largest statistical study of player behavior in World of Warcraft to date (500,000+ characters observed over 5 years). Before that, I developed a wide range of innovative social software ranging from email clients to mobile recommender systems.
