My aspiration is to help others achieve theirs. I believe this editorial best captures who I am:“. . . after talking with [Duf] I found myself once again believing there are people in politics who really get it and who really care . . . He’s not just book smart, he has common sense too. And he listens and is actually interested in hearing what people have to say. The first thing he did . . . was ask about the big issues facing the High Desert . . . He’s the first one who ever asked that. Usually they come in and want to tell you what they know, not find out what they don’t. Not Duf.” Victorville Daily PressCaring about others is essential, but it takes so much more to achieve one’s goals. It takes individual skill, a great team, and the drive to get it done. However, if I had to say what is my “secret sauce” that differentiates my approach from others, it is understanding the difference between “compromise” and the much more productive concept of “collaboration.” When people compromise, they feel like they are giving something up, they think about minimizing their losses. On the other hand, when we collaborate, we feel like we are making a contribution to something bigger than ourselves. That is my goal: to create something bigger than ourselves, something as big as our dreams.
