About Duncan Mcgregor

I am a highly experienced and strategic environmental, planning and climate change lawyer with significant not-for-profit experience.In my current role as a Legal Consultant and previous role as a partner of MinterEllison, I act for both private sector and government clients across a wide range of industries. Key areas of focus include the environmental and planning aspects of infrastructure developments, large retail and commercial developments, climate change and renewable energy projects. I also act for clients in relation to environmental licensing, environmental crime and incident management, approvals pathways for complex projects, major corporate transactions, contaminated land and compulsory acquisitions.In August 2017 I was appointed as a member of the Biodiversity Conservation Trust Board.In recognition of my climate change expertise and experience, in 2010 I was appointed by the Minister of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency as the inaugural Chair of the Commonwealth Governments' Domestic Offsets Integrity Committee under the proposed Carbon Farming Initiative.I also have significant not-for-profit experience, having been a Board Member of Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, a founding member, Vice-President and Life Member of the Sydney Convicts, Australia's most successful gay and inclusive rugby club, and Vice President of Bingham Cup Sydney 2014, Inc the entity established to run the highly successful 2014 Bingham Cup, the gay rugby union world cup. Bingham Cup Sydney, Inc is also one of three founding members of the Pride In Sport Index (with the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Australian Sports Commission) and I represent Bingham Cup Sydney on the Pride In Sport founding members group.

    I am one of a small group of people who established the Sydney Convicts, the world's most successful gay and inclusive rugby club. Player numbers vary from year to year, but typically the Club has approximately 60 - 80 active members.I have been a committee member of the Convicts since the Club's inception in 2004, have been Vice President for six of the Convict's 13 years and was appointed Honorary Life Member of the Club in 204. My last game for the Club was in 2011.In addition to playing with the Club, I have performed a number of significant roles including team manager for many years, chair of the Club's disciplinary committee , organiser of numerous fundraising events and tour manager or co-tour manger for six international tours. The tour manager role required management of flights, accommodation, registration, insurance, medical/physio and events for the tour party which for most tours has been in the order of 60 or 70 players, managers and supporters.In addition, as one of the longest standing members of the Club, I am often called upon to perform a senior statesman role within the Club across a wide variety of issues.

    I have worked with MinterEllison's environmental and planning law practice group from July 2000. I was a partner of MinterEllison from 2000 until June 2017 and since July 2017 have been a Legal Consultant. Within the environmental and planning practice group I have preformed the role of practice group head (2010 - 2015) as well as staff partner for any years. I have also been co-chair of MinterEllison's climate change practice. In August 2017 I was appointed as a member of the Biodiversity Conservation Trust Board.- the sale by long term lease of the NSW freight rail system which required amending legislation, a new planning instrument and significant contractual drafting;- acting in relation to the remediation and redevelopment of one of NSW's largest and most extensively contaminated sites- advising numerous major developers, property owners and managers on the acquisition, disposal and redevelopment of significant commercial, retail, residential and industrial properties- advising on the planning law aspects of the development of some of the country's largest regional shopping centres- providing timely advice on a range of environmental incidents including liaising with relevant regulatory authorities and acting on various associated pollution prosecutions- acting on the environmental aspects of the disposal of the Port of Melbourne.

    I am Vice President Bingham Cup Sydney, the entity established to present the Sydney Bingham Cup which was held in late 2014. The tournament was attended by nearly 1000 gay rugby players and their allies and received significant government, commercial and social support, including from significant entities such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Telstra, Lend Lease, Canon and EY. We also jointly undertook Out On The Fields, the first international study on homophobia in sport. In addition to running a highly successful rugby tournament, the Bingham Cup Sydney 2014 Inc also undertook a number of significant steps in relation to the elimination of homophobia from sport including the preparation of an Anti-Homophobia & Inclusion Framework. In a world first, the organisers encouraged the CEOs of each of the ARU, NRL, AFL, Football Federation and Cricket Australia to sign up to the Framework and commit to its implementation.
