Senior Software DeveloperDevatus Oy May 2020 - PresentVaasa, West And Inner Finland, FinlandI'm lead developer for DeviceVault, a solution that promotes early System Integration by pooling available hardware into a remotely accessible project resource. This includes hardware test farms, individual units sat on developer's desks and laboratory prototypes. DeviceVault can located, reserve, prepared to a known state and provide remote hardware access. DeviceVault also supports a pipeline integration API for automated testing of software applications using real hardware.DeviceVault is comprised of a cloud of small applications, each performing a specific task. These applications do not require installation and communicate using a single outgoing TCP connection to a public address, to date there have been no problems with corporate firewalls. Applications use a peer-to-peer messaging protocol created as part of the project. Access to DeviceVault is authenticated using external services, every message is tied to an authenticated request, separate encryption keys are used for message routing and message content, and this is backed by a fully featured role based ACL system. The implementation is highly efficient, fast and scalable.DeviceVault achieves its goal by allowing project resources to be made available to developers, system integrators and customers for early feedback and testing. This is done in a secure and controlled way that is not limited by physical location or corporate boundaries.Devatus is a small Systems House with customers in the manufacturing and energy sectors. I joined at the peak of the Corona lock-down when most companies were not hiring and was lucky Devatus were able to take a gamble hiring me without a proper interview. Devatus has an active and friendly company culture, and I've been tasked with work that is interesting and fun. -
PhotographerWild Landscapes Jan 2011 - May 2020Wells, SomersetI've been passionate about my photography for a long time; it has gone way beyond being just a hobby. 2011 has been used as the start date simply because that is when the Wild Landscapes website was set up. I was awarded my ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society) in October 2012.I do talks and workshops for Camera Clubs; as well as talking about my own work, I'll talk about anything and often write bespoke materiel.

Project Manager (Software)First Call Payment Protection Ltd Oct 2017 - Feb 2020Weston Super MareAn interesting opportunity to join a small but growing company in the insurance market. My role is to lead the development team ensuring the bespoke system meets the companies needs and is ready for diversification of the companies portfolio. My initial impressions were confirmed in that I need to do a bit of everything while thinking laterally about what is needed next. This includes liaising with the directors, managing the development team, improving the development process, specifying new software features, managing the servers, investigating and fixing problems within the system, and occasionally writing chunks of fresh code. Our workflow uses Jira, Mercurial and the IntelliJ IDE. We work in an Agile-lke environment. The technology stack I'm regularly working with is Java, Swing, HTML, CSS, JSP, Struts, Apache, Tomcat and Linux servers. The system is underpinned by MySQL, ORMLite, Hibernate and web integration with a number of 3rd parties. -
SabbaticalHome Feb 2016 - Oct 2017Wells, SomersetA conscious decision to take a break after two intense years working on Bobs Box Office.I spent most of my sabbatical pursuing the sport of caving and improving my fitness. I learnedto survey caves and thoroughly enjoy using lasers to gather the raw survey data and process itinto 3D models.I presented sessions on photography and surveying at the European caving convention(EuroSpeleo 2016). I was invited to join the prestigious Ario Caves Project whose goal is toexplore and map an area in Northern Spain with potential for a super-deep cave system. While on sabbatical I also met and married a Finn.It was a wonderful break and I was ready to return to work.

DirectorBobs Box Office Feb 2014 - Feb 2016Wells, SomersetA start-up seeking to provide an efficient way for events and venues to manage their ownticketing and avoid the problems and costs of using a third party. This was a web application that was simple to start using but powerful enough to configurewith multiple ticket outlets, a mix of physical and electronic tickets, general admission andseated venues, price bands, promotions, branding and many other advanced features. The system was deployed on a robust scalable AWS architecture, the user interface workedefficiently on low bandwidth connections, coped elegantly with small screens and was designedto be accessible. The software was written in Java, Javascript and MySQL running on Apacheand Tomcat. Many third party libraries were integrated including SMS, Email, Physical Mail,PayPal payments, PDF and Chart creation, ZIP files, localisation and user authentication.I was one of the two company founders and wrote the product. A third person was recruited tocope with the administrative side of running the company. The product was successfully trialledat several small to medium size events.Momentum from the successful trials was lost through a lack of sales and marketing effort. Thecompany was wound down because we failed to fix the problems.

Software DevelopmentQinetiq Commerce Decisions Apr 2001 - Feb 2014Wells, SomersetJohn Thompson persuaded Richard Tottman and I to join their start-up and write the launch product.Nobody had a clear idea of what Procurement Software was supposed to do; hence the first release of AWARD provided huge versatility, but performance and scalability wasn't great. I worked for a year unpaid, and the rest is history...When I left Commerce Decisions, AWARD 6 was nearing completion. This version was a total rewrite intended to pick up the latest technologies and capitalise on the team's thorough understanding of the domain. In the previous version we'd had our fingers burned with EJBs, so despite evaluating alternative software stacks the rewrite was undertaken using Plain Old Java Objects (POJO). Progress was looking very healthy and AWARD 6 ought to be a significant improvement over previous versions. In addition to Software Development, I spent a lot of time on customer sites. I took consultancy jobs from the Services team when they were short-handed. The work came in bursts, and one notable quarter I even managed to take the title of highest utilised consultant! My speciality was coaching bidders and my win ratio was one of the best in the company.Commerce Decisions was a great place to work; most employees stayed longer than any company they had previously worked. The ethics, especially in the early days, can pretty much be summed up as "work hard, play hard, and don't take the piss". -
