I spent a year at Information is Beautiful, heading up the team building Beautiful News - a chart a day, showing how the world is becoming a better place. I managed a small team, designed graphics, oversaw social media and built the systems and processes necessary to create 365 charts in a year.

How We Get To Next is a charitably-funded publication, filled with inspiring stories about the people and places that are building our future. I was an editor there, focusing on data journalism.

In this position, I was responsible for writing a substantial portion of the in-house content that goes onto the site, as well as commissioning and editing content from other contributors, contributing to the podcast, and looking after the Wired.co.uk community. During my time at the site, traffic increased four-fold and I took a significant step up in my responsibilities.

At Pocket-lint I wrote more than 2000 news articles and plenty of reviews and features for the site. My focus was on software, videogames and digital music, but I covered a massively wide range of consumer electronics, including the IFA and CES tradeshows. I was ranked #1 technology journalist in the UK by Apollo Research by volume of posts in August 2009. At Pocket-lint, I learnt how to write news fast and accurately.

At Shiny Media, I wrote well over a thousand short and long-form posts on Tech Digest – the company’s flagship technology blog. I covered an enormous range of consumer electronics, but with a particular focus on digital media, web services and videogames. I gained good relationships with PRs and other journalists, and considerably improved the quality of my writing.

Way to Blue is a leading international online entertainment PR company. In this role I researched digital initiatives and web applications to determine new innovative ways of promoting new products. I also helped to manage the in-house contacts database and performed certain IT support functions, as well as assisting publicists with creative new-media ideas and suggestions for their campaigns. At Way to Blue, I got great experience of working to precise briefs, dealing with professional clients at all levels, setting and meeting KPIs and some knowledge of SEO.

Working at Cooking Vinyl, I performed varied administrative tasks. This included mailouts, message board seeding, online research, maintenance of Myspace sites, and looking after their website’s digital music database and the label’s varied back catalogue. Here I gained direct experience of the way a small independent label operates.

This elected position required me to work within a team of 6 full-time sabbatical officers and 6 non-sabbatical officers to maintain and run separately the charity and company of Reading University Students' Union. At all times I was accountable to the student body.My major duties were:• Representing the opinions of 14,000 students to the University.• Developing the Student Media (a weekly 32-page newspaper and a 24/7 radio station) while allowing them to remain editorially independent. • Acting as a Press Officer for the Union, relaying press releases to local and national media and responding to external enquiries.• Making sure that everything the Union does was adequately communicated to 14,000 students in a variety of forms, including print, broadcast and online.• Formulating and implementing major policy decisions on both large and small committees.• Coordinating the annual elections for the following year's officers as Chair of Elections.
