Co-recipient of the 2016 Ken Erickson Innovation Award for a mobile rail maintenance data and Best Use of Geographic Data (National Award, GovHack 2014).Where is my current thinking at?Well, like everyone else, I’d read the Eric Ries books and applied the Lean Agile methodology in projects over the years. But two key things were still missing. For me, at least.Firstly, we’d end each project happy but exhausted. “We learned a lot and delivered a tonne. Let’s never do this again!” Burn out was a real issue. Learning how to keep up a reliable sprint cadence while also fostering enthusiasm – without stress and without burn out – was a real step forward. It was the leap in technique that gave me a good basis in better, more sane methods. Knowing when to apply the rules of these methods and when to break them.Secondly, a certain amount of ‘richness’ had gone out of our design process. We were all targeting lean, MVP results, and that left design showcases feeling underwhelming. I was extremely fortunate to work with the team who came up with the Absolute Fidelity model of software design. That changed everything. Taking a genuinely playful and experimental approach to the front-end design, away from (and ahead of) the engineering process let me bring fully articulated software designs.
