About Duncan Stevenson
I am a financial and risk professional with 30 years experience in the Invoice Finance and ABL sectors. I have a proven track record of working at a senior level, delivering to strict deadlines. I have extensive line management experience, which includes leading teams through periods of significant change. My areas of expertise include fraud and financial crime, risk assessment, credit sanctioning, internal investigations, design and delivery of training, the legal aspects of contracts and documentation, negotiating documentation, as well as all aspects of Invoice Finance and Asset Based Lending. After taking Voluntary Redundancy from RBS Invoice Finance in October 2019, I intended to devote my time and energy for a short while working in the not-for-profit sector. Two years of COVID 19 restrictions meant that this time became longer than I had anticipated, however I feel privileged to have worked with three organisations which were going through really challenging times, and to have worked with some really great teams. I feel that I was able to use my extensive people management experience for social good. Throughout my career and free time, I have led teams through periods of significant organisational change, valuing the experience of everyone around me, while acknowledging their perceived fear of the unknown. I am skilled in Operations Management, Financial Management, Change Management, Risk Management, Business Planning, Auditing, Legal Document Preparation, Process Reviews and Delivering Multi-Site Training Workshops, all mainly UK-wide.

This involves working closely with colleagues across the business. - assisting Relationship Managers to identify risk issues, while also being very supportive of Client retention requirements. - carrying out full portfolio reviews with Relationship Managers. This includes proposing and directing strategies for Client situations, and re-structuring facilities where necessary. - supporting the Credit Risk team to develop our credit appetite, in line with business requirements and market changes. - ensuring the business complies with all legal, regulatory and corporate governance requirements.
Operations Manager
Employability social business importing coffee, roasting it for sale locally and nationally. I used much of my financial and business planning experience to streamline processes, bring the cashflow into a sustainable position and document workflows to empower team members to take greater ownership without compromising quality. Supporting people who had experienced the criminal justice system, insecure housing, interrupted education, addiction or other barriers to employment, I compassionately worked with them hands-on. It could be a challenging work environment as there were constantly changing priorities, but a flexible attitude, resilience and sense of humour could often defuse tricky situations as we focused in on the aims and goals. Operating with integrity was crucial, as relationships such as those with the Scottish Prison Service and recovery/ care sector partner agencies were based on mutual trust. Behind the scenes, clients purchasing coffee had a high level of confidence that we were operating in an ethical, socially-responsible, person-centred way. Part of my role was to continually plan ahead with raw materials, packaging and logistics. Number-crunching and working with complex data were part of my multi-tasking remit. Being involved in- and professionalising- every part of the operation was a valuable first-hand, intensive insight into the coal-face challenges faced by social entrepreneurs post-pandemic. I took pride in remaining approachable and in enabling a positive work environment where everyone was valued for their unique insight and experience.
Warehouse Manager
My intention was to volunteer for a few months after leaving my national level role in RBS business banking. However, the arrival of the pandemic triggered my project management, team leadership and change management skills. With unprecedented demand, overwhelming levels of food donations, lockdowns and regular volunteers shielding, I managed every aspect of the warehouse facilities while ensuring health and safety protocols were met. I reacted quickly to become an “essential worker” with full-time hours, partly paid, partly volunteering. While quality standards had to be met for the Trussell Trust systems, existing operations were not fit for a crisis situation like a pandemic. Through a commitment to see the job through on both sites, I became very physically active in leading heavily depleted teams, sorting, cataloguing and storing stock in a more logical way, also establishing and growing partnership working with community groups that could distribute bulk deliveries. It was a memorable experience of trying to turn perceived chaos into calm. When this had been achieved, the job roles were in a good place for handover as pandemic restrictions were lifted. I have been volunteering in anti-poverty projects for decades and this seemed a very productive way to stay active and have community impact while many others were furloughed or restrictions meant working from home. Supporting marginalised groups during this time, and recognising their own resourcefulness, was incredibly humbling and filled me with inspiration to be part of longer term solutions in a post-pandemic world.
Head Of Legal, Fraud & Business Intelligence
Responsible for managing a national team of dedicated business intelligence, legal and fraud professionals, including regular travel to London and Manchester, I utilised my UK-wide network of legal professionals to ensure that documentation was fit for purpose, up-to-date and complied with all current legislation. Consequently, I have a high level of understanding of the theory and the practical application of both English and Scots Law in business matters. I was also responsible for providing GDPR and financial documentation legality workshops for all staff across the business, removing jargon and focusing on essential information to communicate clearly to this audience. In particular, the team supported new clients, especially where we needed to think out of the box and create non-standard documentation. I am highly experienced in re-writing detailed communications and material to fit the target readers, grow trust and provide the best possible outcome for all parties. Representation of RBSIF at industry level included being Chair of the UK Finance - Invoice Finance and ABL Legal and Operations Forum in addition to being an active member of the Financial Crime Forum. These were positions of industry-wide trust that grew my partnership working abilities and reputation as someone who listens to all stakeholders and is a safe pair of hands to ensure that outcomes are delivered.
Head Of Fraud & Business Intelligence
Ultimate responsibility for introducing policies and procedures to minimise and detect fraud at the earliest stage, and designing and delivering UK-wide training events for all staff in RBSIF. As a result, I have strong track record in designing and delivering multi-site training. I oversaw the reporting and analysis of all frauds within RBSIF, monitoring emerging risks and fraud activity, and reporting to Board level where appropriate. Confidentiality and team work were paramount. Finely tuned communication and stakeholder management were key aspects of the role as there was a high level of corporate and professional liability at stake. Parallel to this, I led a project team and launched the Business Intelligence Intranet as a user-friendly platform for front office colleagues to access key online support materials to assist with the on-boarding of new business and growth of existing portfolios. It was a fast-paced project, incorporated into my remit and a first for the business for joined-up thinking of this kind.
Regional Head Of Risk
This role included all aspects of risk for the Scotland Office of RBS Invoice Finance. Primarily - risk management, credit sanctioning, fraud prevention, audit and recoveries. As the team leader of the risk function staff, I worked very closely with an extensive network of external legal and insolvency practitioners, particularly in contentious recovery cases. Integrity, diplomacy, thinking on my feet, developing staff and managing conflicting pressures on my time were key to delivering results.
Manager, Client Relations
I was part of the team responsible for establishing the new regional office of Bank of Scotland Cashflow Finance. Mainly based in the Glasgow office, my role encompassed all aspects of invoice finance and asset-based lending. I progressed to lead the team of relationship managers covering Scotland. Approachability, humanity, commitment and CPD enabled me to support a team the covered a huge geographic area.
Banking Officer
Working in several branches of the Clydesdale Bank, responsibilities included customer-facing transactions as well as back office functions. Working as part of a fast-paced team, with attention to detail, this was an excellent foundation for working in the financial sector. I had chosen not to go to university on leaving school. Parallel to working, I completed my banking examinations, to degree level, through evening classes and day release. Being organised with time management, prioritising tasks and growing a positive work ethic were valuable professional and life skills.
