Professor of Connected Environments in The Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at University College London. Research focuses on how emerging technologies such as connected sensors and cognitive computing can augment our understanding of the built and natural environment. The Connected Environments research focuses on three core research vectors; cognitive computing - AI at the edge of the network on resource constrained devices; extra sensory computing - novel methods for capturing data and humans receiving it; and spatial reasoning systems - how we can augment and improve our world models using an Internet of Things for continuous post occupancy evaluation.

Director / Principal Investigator at the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities, a collaboration with University College London and Imperial College. Responsible for driving the research agenda for the institute and developing the network of collaborators (industry / academic / government) at this "Open IP" institute. Over first 3 year "discovery phase" the institute tripled the investment made by Intel, UCL and Imperial through securing funding from external collaborators and funding bodies such as EPSRC, Innovate UK and EU H2020. Working in Foresight and Innovation team at Arup with a personal focus on ubiquitous computing in the built environment.Established foresight capability within Arup and co-created the Drivers of Change concept http://www.driversofchange.com/ to identify and communicate the trends and issues likely to have a significant impact in the built environment and society at large.Responsible for initiating and delivering collaboratively funded research in the area of ubiquitous computing in the built environment (EU FP7 – SENSEI; TSB – Bop / CMIPS / YouCareTaker; SFI - ITOBO). Member of the EU Expert Group on the Internet of Things, act as advisor to EU FP7 and research council funded projects (Smart Santander, REDUCE) and global champion for urban informatics in Arup’s Digital Environments Skills Network. Supervises PhD students at UCL, runs a “Future of …” module for the MA in Narrative Environments at Central Saint Martins and mentors students from the course.Created and continues to develop the “Invest in Arup” funding portal – a web application to manage and share information about global R&D and innovation activity in Arup.As UKMEA leader and global finance leader for the team I am responsible for staff management and operating plan creation, monitoring and reporting for a team of 12.
