I realised with some surprise that I hadn't updated my profile in a while... so...I have the pleasure of working with a skilled group of people at RWDI who enjoy the work we do; working with creative architects and engineers on challenging projects for inspired clients. I personally get a kick out of finding nuances in climate, site, materiality and shape that lead to practical design changes for the urban realm and buildings. Ultimately, we are seeking to reduce the energy demand of spaces and generate restorative structures. The interaction of climate on the built environment, and vice-versa need not be adversarial.My academic training was on measuring and analysing the mixing of air within rooms. This has direct application to designing ventilation systems that provide better air quality and thermal comfort to the occupants. I have been able to use this background on projects including the protection of historical artifacts in museums, industrial ventilation, hospital settings, office spaces as well as life safety systems in transit stations. Some of the work I have presented / published clearly shows that the air distribution in a room can directly influence the exposure to contaminants.As Global Practice Leader for CFD/ Building Performance/ Ventilation at RWDI, I am involved in project execution and developing new methodologies for analysing buildings and the urban realm. I've had the opportunity to apply climate design strategies to a variety of building and urban realm types. This includes natural ventilation with thermal mass in stadia and schools, parking garages, laboratory buildings and museums. I have also worked on projects were we seek to "manipulate" wind and outdoor temperature to achieve the right level of infiltration into stadia (not too much, not too little) as well as generate perceptions of cooler streetscapes and occupied spaces. Some of the unique projects I have been involved with include sand mitigation for railways in the Middle East, stack effect in supertall buildings and a couple of net zero cities.
