About Duru Unal
As a second year student majoring in human biology and minoring in immunology and physiology at the University of Toronto, I have a passion for research. Growing up in a world that is constantly developing has made me realize that I want to contribute to the future of healthcare. I believe that developing this foundational pillar of our society is essential in order to best adjust to twenty-first century globalization. I am passionate about getting involved in the community I grew up in because not limiting myself to one specific path allows me to broaden my knowledge in other areas and allow me to develop my point of view. As a result, when presented with an opportunity to contribute to current and future research that is developing lifesaving technology in the healthcare sector, I will be able to approach my studies with first hand experiences of what can really benefit individuals and their communities. This past year I have taken 2 lab courses that have taught me skills such as micropipetting, PCR, introductory bioinformatics and gel electrophoresis. My involvement for the past 2 years as a choreographer and an arts & visual literacy society student leader has given me a solid foundation in adaptability, quality control and collaboration as well as a solid foundation in team environments, respectfulness and the importance of cultural and gender sensitivity in professional settings. Additionally, I thrive in environments that require team members to be proficient in time-management, multi-tasking, and organisation. I am confident that these are skills and perspectives that I could bring to the lab. Beyond the lab, I have been gotten involved in the University of Toronto community that values inclusivity and innovation by taking on leadership positions in various clubs. Some of my experiences include being the head of advocacy at the women’s advocacy and outreach club that works to make a difference in women’s issues within our community and on a global scale, being an event coordinator for the St. George chapter of Best Buddies Canada which fosters inclusivity and builds meaningful friendships for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, being an upper year representative of the TSA that aims to assist Turkish students who have newly arrived to the university, and being a public relations & outreach committee member of the Concussions Legacy Foundation Canada UofT chapter which aims to solve the concussion crisis in Canada through research and education.
