Project Work Experience :1) Scientific Code Development To Solve Three Dimensional Reacting Three-Phase Flows To Study Combustion In Fiber Supported Fuel Droplets (details) Developed three-dimensional scientific code to solve the internal and external three-phase flows with surface tension and simulate the vaporization and combustion of methanol droplets supported on thin fibers. The project was funded by NASA Glenn Research Center. Simulations were done to complement microgravity droplet combustion experiments in space shuttles and drop towers by key researchers in the field. Wrote over 65,000 lines of code in FORTRAN. Solved conservation equations using finite volume methods in liquid and gas phases with interface coupling. Wrote up codes to create fairly complex three-dimensional meshes with phase interface exchange of variables. Also accommodated and made use of routines to generate chimera structured meshes, and CHEMKIN II subroutines to solve reacting flows. Studied the effects of surface tension effects originating from sharp gradients along the liquid-fiber interface. Quantified effects of heat transfer and surface tension caused by the inclusion of the support fiber on droplet burning and flame structure. Published and presented findings in various scientific journals and conferences2) Combustion Experiments Using Lasers :(details) Project funded through NSF grants. Experiments involved imaging of laser-induced fluorescence of acetone in burning methanol and propanol droplets. Experiments done by passing a laser beam through the lens to create a planar light sheet that when made to pass through a supported fuel droplet would excite the acetone doped in the fuel that were useful in visualizing the internal flows of the burning droplets, when captured with high intensity CCD cameras. Studied and documented the findings and published the work in conferences and scientific journals.

Main challenges : Worked as a responsible engineer officer on board oil tanker ships. Ships sail worldwide in high seas for many days at a stretch. This requires optimal running of all engines and machinery. There are no margins for breakdowns and errors. Malfunctions leading to life-threatening situations can build up at any time.Responsibilities:=> Operations including troubleshooting and fixing malfunctions of all onboard machinery, that primarily includes very large two-stroke and mid-sized power generation four-stroke engines, steam boilers, and turbines, air compressors, various pumps, steering systems, and large-sized refrigeration and air conditioning units.=> Planned and breakdown maintenance operations to fix regular and life-threatening issues of all of the above machinery some of which I was directly responsible for and others involved seamless teamwork with other engineers and shipboard staff. => Responsible and certified engineer officer with daily reporting to the Chief Engineer of the ship=> Allocate work and direct junior engineers and staff on day to day work and operations=> Flawless communication and coordination with navigation (deck) officers and staff on regular cruise and manoeuvering operations and oil cargo loading and discharge at ports=> Well trained to quickly handle and react to life-threatening situations such as fires, and emergency evacuation procedures in high seasExperience Gained :=> Extensive hands-on-experience on huge diesel engines and power plant machinery inside ships, with sound understanding of the propulsion engine and plant operations=> Develop abilities to quickly fix engineering problems and issues to maintain system stability and avoid escalation to life-threatening situations.=> Preparedness to handle unforeseen life-threatening circumstances=> Clear competency exams for certifications and promotions, wherein we got tested extensively on domain and technical knowledge
