Dr. Uslan has many years' experience leading system initiatives improving value, quality, innovation, and performance excellence for UCLA Health. He is the Chief Infection Prevention Officer and Clinical Chief of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine. Subject matter expertise includes infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, performance improvement, clinical quality and safety, process change, physician relations and alignment, and innovation. Possess leadership skills including effective communication, collaboration, and boundary-spanning teamwork.Dr. Uslan started and built the UCLA Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, which was identified by the Infectious Diseases Society of America as a Center of Excellence. In 2012 he was awarded the a fellowship from University of California's Office of the President Center for Healthcare Quality and Innovation for study of a system-wide antimicrobial stewardship program. Since 2020 Dr. Uslan has served as Co-Chief Infection Prevention Officer for UCLA Health, where he is responsible for oversight of all infection prevention activities including surveillance for hospital infections such as central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and drug-resistant microorganisms. Dr. Uslan's work requires close collaboration with hospital administration, Quality Management, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Engineering, and Environmental Services, among others. He has successfully implemented a new hand hygiene program, novel environmental disinfection strategies using ultraviolet light, and a C diff program. Dr. Uslan have led numerous UCLA infection prevention efforts, including our COVID-19 and monkeypox response, measles exposures, and multiple outbreak investigations. Dr. Uslan also provided COVID-19 consulting services for a number of industries such as film and television production.Dr. Uslan received his medical degree from University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also earned an M.S. in Biotechnology from Northwestern University. Dr. Uslan completed his internship, residency, and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In 2016 he completed an Executive MBA program at UCLA Anderson School of Management. Dr. Uslan's clinical interests include bloodstream infections, surgical infections, endocarditis and other cardiovascular infections, and neurological infections.
