Manager, Experience Engineering And ArchitectureDigital River Aug 2014 - Mar 2015Minnetonka, Mn, UsResponsibilities included reviewing code from remote teams, trailblazing new technologies, collaborating with business analysts and UX designers on user stories, triaging production issues, evangelizing UI standards, or working with technical leaders as we evolved the enterprise e-commerce platform.Removing obstacles for my team was a major focus for me. I would often spend time creating custom tools for the team to make them happier their jobs more efficient. My proudest moment was when my team won team of the quarter at Digital River for creating a tool that enabled the web development teams to publish updates to a CRM instantly vs multiple minutes per change. This led to increased productivity, and even more importantly to increased job satisfaction within the UI engineering team. -
Lead User Interface DeveloperDigital River May 2011 - Jul 2014Minnetonka, Mn, UsMy passion was centered around building up a quality team of front end engineers, and then working with them to solve problems for the business and engineering teams. Some of the projects I managed:- Led the refactor our UI framework build system. During the last couple years, the UI development landscape completely changed. New frameworks such as React, SASS, Node.js, any many others have become the new standards for front end development. By moving from an older Ant/Java based system to node.js the CSS/Javascript build times when from 45 to 3 seconds. Converting the CSS to SASS has simplified our code and the new SASS functions increase developer velocity. Using MongoDB as the database instead of mysql worked well for this application due to the need to store JSON rather than structured data.- Created a single page javascript app that hits an SAP Soap API and allows users to quickly add time. Time tracking usage and accuracy increased greatly by allowing users to use any browser versus the standard UI which only allowed IE7.- Led the architecture and development of a custom task, project, and capacity management system in JSP/Java/MySQL used by teams to track work. This integrates with our SAP installation to keep that system up to date with task changes.- Served as the architect of a project to integrate the UIs of our two biggest platforms, Global Commerce and Digital River World Payments. -
Senior User Interface DeveloperDigital River Feb 2010 - Jan 2012Minnetonka, Mn, UsAs the company and UI developer team grew, my role expanded to include team lead and management duties. I was responsible for staffing up a larger UI developer team to support the ever increasing needs of the engineering organization. Creating a great work environment and mentoring new developers were a strong focus for me. This was an exciting time as the team began to "norm", and then as it gained strength, to "storm" through many projects successfully. It is an exciting moment for me when after pairing with a new developer they can drop the training wheels and ride freely.Improving the team's efficiency was key to its success so I continued to push the evolution of our in house UI framework called Beacon. Eventually the framework became the standard used across the enterprise tools clients use to administer their sites. This was not an easy task as there were multiple technologies in use such as JSP, PHP and ASP.net. Working with technical leads from each platform I assisted them on migrating off older frameworks onto Beacon. This was met with great success and many platforms had great feedback from customers after the re-launch of their products.Creating a standard front end framework has allowed the back end teams to deliver great user experiences without needing to worry about cross browser issues that are famous for sapping time away from projects. -
