In the past 10 years I have been blessed to experience and accomplish things that I never thought possible. I have been a caregiver for my father-in-law who suffered from Alzheimer's, graduated with my bachelor's in social science with a concentration in education, graduated with my master's in professional counseling, volunteer with the Family Readiness Group to help military families during deployments, begin to build my career in professional counseling, and be a sturdy foundation for my children and husband while living this military lifestyle. If I were to go back 10 years and tell myself that this was what was ahead I would laugh. Although these life situations have been difficult it is what has helped me pinpoint the direction I want to go professionally. My three passions are military families and children of soldiers, caregivers for Alzheimer and dementia patients, and mentoring college students. Military families have a few more outside influences that can damage the family system. My goal is to guide these families to the resources available to them and utilize these resources to help build a solid foundation for their family system. Caregiver for Alzheimer and dementia patients is probably the most taxing job for a person. Especially if the patient continues to live at home. My goal in this area would be to educate the caregiver on the disease and what actually occurs in the brain during the deterioration process and be a support person for when times become stressful and physically demanding. The third area that I'm interested in is mentoring college students. This time period is very difficult and stressful, and I feel that high schools and many parents do not prepare the adolescent to manage life as an individual with the proper coping skills, financial tools, and proper goal setting for future planning.
