It is also an important time for forming relationships with their new classmates, dormmates, and other University of Colorado community staff members. During the months of orientation, many engaging programs and activities keep students active and settled into campus life.As a New Student Orientation intern, my objective was to assist thousands of new coming students in answering students and 700-1300 attending the University throughout the years. Orientation runs from May through August and in January. Besides assisting, I also coordinate various items across all orientation programs, including catering, resource fairs, and other morning activities; evaluate and assess orientation programs, including pre-orientation survey, orientation evaluation, and six-week check-in survey for on-campus and online programs; and work with the director of orientation to develop various pieces and modes of communication for the student’s population and their parents. As a result, I was able to learn and work in a highly collaborative environment balancing the needs of different departments and new coming students with their parents. I also develop a leadership role that helps support student civic programs, such as facilitating faculty-student interactions and collaborations with residential colleges on campus. Show less

Pulling from my personal experiences as an undergraduate student, I developed and established a program to bridge the educational access gap experienced by first-generation, low-income students. The students that we served experienced the following challenges: 1) Victims of the model minority stereotype; 2) Unable to successfully navigate through the University; 3) Concept of failure is life-threatening; 4) Low self-esteem and confidence issues; 5) Lacking the skills to communicate with their parents effectively, and 6) self-doubt of personal abilities. Our goal was to provide a support system that addresses these issues and challenges. We hope our students will develop an understanding of the concept of “pay it forward” when it comes to helping others. Show less
