Derrick Studied tourism Management at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, when in 2004 he received his National Diploma in Tourism Management. In 2006 Derrick’s time had come, and his passion for entertaining and the ocean had met in the form of a cruise ship. Starting his on board career, being part of the entertainment team. Derrick for no better word was like a fish to water, immediately adjusting to ship life and really feeling like this is where he was meant to be.Over the years Derrick worked tirelessly, acquiring five more languages and making his way to the top becoming the youngest Cruise Director for MSC Cruises at the age of 26. His inherent energy, determination, enthusiasm and integrity has allowed him to excel in the entertainment world of cruising. As Cruise Director he was in charge of all of the entertainment activities and entertainment on board. Derrick managed a crew of over 100 performers ranging from musicians, Technicians to dancers and acrobats from around the world.Derrick parted ways with MSC in 2013 and shortly thereafter joined the Industry leader in Entertainment - Disney Cruise Line. Derrick worked onboard Disney Cruise Lines “Disney Dream” as Club host - In charge of Entertainment Activities for adult cruisers. Derrick's Career took a turn when moving to Maple Ridge, B.C in 2015. He Immigrated to Canada to be with his then partner, now wife and business partner Caara van Wyk. After entering Canada as a permanent resident he worked in acquiring representation to pursue a dream career in the film industry. He quickly signed with Kirk Talent where he saw success working as an actor and Dialect coach on amazing shows such as Netflix’s Lucifer, Apple TV’s Home Before Dark and Legendary Pictures Skyscraper. In June of 2018 Derrick joined forces with Caara and started Blue Crane Ventures.ltdTogether they produced 2 stage shows - Loca Luna in 2018 and Blue Moon in 2019. In 2020 Caara’s experience and love for teaching the art of acrobatics was added to the portfolio as Blue Crane Contortion.Since its inception Blue Crane Contortion has grown and now facilitates over 150 full time students. Blue Crane is more than a training centre, Derrick and Caara’s positive energy and outlook in life and careers really incompasses the company's mission of “building and nurturing confidence through the art of acrobatics and performance“.
