In my first 18 months back with Treehouse Software, I've been serving as the team's Director of Innovation and Cloud Solutions Architect. Besides managing the company's hybrid cloud infrastructure (our accounts with the leading cloud vendors), it falls to me to continually track and make sense of the new and ever-changing cloud offerings coming onto the market. I've been keeping up-to-date not only on potential target databases and datastores, but also the pipelines, toolsets, services, and APIs available to creatively extend our reach and capabilities in the overall mainframe-to-cloud data migration realm.Among my most recent endeavors:• Designed, developed, & documented a “data flow toolkit”: a Lambda-based package which includes advanced crawler functions to derive structured Redshift, Snowflake, & Athena tables/views for access to complex hierarchical JSON-formatted data. Delivered to customers via CloudFormation & Lambda Layers.• Designed, developed, & documented a CloudFormation-based “Getting Started Guide” infrastructure which automatically creates a fully configured VPC and all required resources (IAM, EC2, RDS, MSK, Lambda, etc.), to allow prospective customers to quickly install and do hands-on assessment of Treehouse’s flagship mainframe-to-cloud data-migration product within an AWS VPC context (all components built in full adherence to AWS Well-Architected Framework standards).• Architected an AWS-based, multi-AZ "High Availability Framework" for Treehouse's flagship data-migration product (utilizing Step & Lambda Functions, Route 53, EventBridge, etc.) and installed at customer sites.• Built microservice-based pipelines to consume streaming data from Kafka, Kinesis, EventHubs, and Confluent Cloud, targeting JSON-friendly, cloud-native datastores like DynamoDB, CosmosDB, Snowflake, & Redshift.• Managed the company's hybrid cloud infrastructure, including accounts with AWS, Azure, Confluent, and Snowflake.

Highlights of 4 years as a Hadoop and AWS data engineer with New York Life Insurance Company include…• JAVA: Extended/enhanced Java user-defined-functions which constitute the interface between Dremio (data query accelerator) and Protegrity (data tokenizer). Bringing best-practices software lifecycle management and full documentation to the enterprise’s existing body of Java code.• PYTHON3: Designed and developed an AWS/SDK (boto3) framework for on-premises invocation/monitoring of AWS services:o Framework is a formally structured Python3 application, designed with flexibility of deployment in mind: deployable either in on-prem Linux server, cloud-based EC2 server, or cloud-based serverless environment.o Authored comprehensive documentation for the framework for development, deployment, and operations.o Developed formal Python wheel-based build/deploy methodology, providing straightforward, nondestructive production deployments/upgrades.o Framework is now easily extended by others to include any additional AWS service that requires ESP-based, on-premises invocation and monitoring. (E.g., addition of remote invocation/monitoring of Glue Jobs to the framework was completed by an intern in a few hours.) • Specialized in CDC (changed data capture) data ingestion infrastructure:o Performed extensive engineering work with Syncsort Corporation’s CDC product suite to bring it into alignment with the needs of New York Life for near real time data ingestion from Oracle databases into the Hadoop enterprise data hub.o Served as main NYL contact to vendor’s support and Professional Services teams to successfully document a number of serious flaws in Syncsort’s CDC products and ultimately receive and apply fixes for all known issues.o Developed extensive documentation to make up for the serious lack of operational, installation, and configuration manuals from the vendor.

Daniel Vimont has been a software engineer since the late 80s. For much of the last twenty years, he has been engaged in designing, building, and marketing data and metadata migration tools, with his greatest success being tRelational, a metadata migration and modeling tool which forms a crucial part of the flagship data migration suite of Treehouse Software: http://treehouse.com/tReDPS.shtmlDuring the freelance phase of his career, he was engaged in shifting the focus of his career to the world of Big Data, concentrating mostly on making contributions to the Apache HBase project: (1) authoring the new hbase-archetype subproject, now publicly available in HBase release 1.3; (2) authoring/promoting ColumnManager for HBase, a standalone metadata management add-on to HBase available via Maven and GitHub.Following up on on his recent release of ColumnManager for HBase, http://bit.ly/ColumnManager, he worked on adding ColumnManager's "column aliasing"​ functionality directly to the HBase code-base.
