I have been involved with both metallurgy and heat treating steel components for almost 35 years. My work in the roller bearing industry allowed me to gain a very good knowledge of neutral hardening, carburizing and carbo-nitriding processes. It also allowed me to understand the effects of these heat treat operations on the metallurgy of the low carbon steels used for shell and cage material and 52100 material used for rollers.My work in the powder metal industry where we make various components out of low alloy steel powder has allowed me to expand my knowledge of heat treating to the effects of different heat treat operations on powder metal components, particularly sintering and hot forging. My involvement in the metallurgical laboratory has allowed me to gain a very strong understanding of the hot forging process and the effects of different parameters on the metallurgy, and am very involved in the problem solving process of hot forging as related to the metallurgy. It has also given me the opportunity to work directly with the sintering furnaces and endothermic generators and to develop a very good understanding of the operation of this equipment. Along with this work and understanding I have developed a good base knowledge for problem solving of both the sintering and endothermic generation process and am frequently involved in problem solving for both.My role here has expanded to the operation side of our sintering process and I have had the opportunity to follow several capital projects to completion mainly in re-building sintering furnaces, upgrading the controls of some of our sintering furnaces with automatic carbon controls and updated process controls, and have upgraded several of of our endothermic generators with a much better system for dew point and temperature control.
