As a crisis counselor (CC) at 988, I am responsible for supporting people who are facing major crises in their lives. Utilizing the skills of empathy + validation + coping, we provide an outlet for those who have no one to talk to. As a CC, I have been exposed to judgements of professionals and close contacts outside the industry who may underestimate this position. However, that has only fueled the desire in me to support those facing mental health crises. I have been able to deeply understand various crises through this position. Some of them being: domestic violence, homelessness, healthcare issues, depression, personality disorders, PTSD, neurocognitive disorders, and the list only extends further. With this knowledge, I am looking to further understand the mindset of those facing mental health crises and how to progress their recovery through cognitive behavioral and neuroscience based practices.
