About Drew Smith

It has been said that knowledge is power and that education is the precondition for political development, democracy, and social justice. I believe that technology, when leveraged correctly, has the potential to improve education by a massive degree. This is why I have spent the better part of the past two decades focused on developing and improving technology solutions that support academic success.I am an information technology professional with a passion for empowering people to do great things. I got my start in technology service and support over twenty years ago as a student assistant while attending the Art Institute. Over time I continued to develop my technology skills as I worked my way up the ranks to eventually lead the entire Campus Technology team that supports over fifty campuses nationwide.Having grown up on a farm, I learned from a very young age to value hard work and integrity. These values have served me well as I developed as a manager. I lead by example and never hesitate to roll up my sleeves and work alongside my team to get the job done. In my experience, I have found that there is always a better way and I work tirelessly to support my team in the goal of continually improving the service, solutions, and customer support we provide.I am a life-long learner who is always striving to teach myself new skills. In my spare time I recently learned Apple’s Swift programming language and launched an Apple Watch game called PetriPet. I also enjoy vintage video games and built my own four-player full size arcade machine cabinet and a Raspberry Pi based Nintendo Game Boy with color LCD display. While I’ve never been able to teach myself guitar — I DO love music. Attending music festivals like Bunbury and Lollapalooza every summer with my wife and daughter keeps me hip to the know.If you’re interested in grabbing coffee and talking tech (or to challenge me to a game of Mortal Kombat), please send an email my way.

  • Dream Center Education Holdings, Llc
Director Of Infrastructure & Campus Technology
Dream Center Education Holdings, Llc Oct 2017 - May 2019
    Pittsburgh , Pa, Us
After several phases of leadership reorganizations, I took the helm as the Director of the Campus Technology department. As a result of the various shake-ups in IT leadership over the past few years, IT staff on campus had become frustrated, complacent, and skeptical. I quickly focused the team on the four principles of execution (4DX), invested in training staff through ‘Tech Talk’ webinars, established standardized processes, and fixed communication gaps which improved employee morale and led to lower staff turn-over and higher customer satisfaction scores. In addition to resolving our staffing crisis, these were my other core responsibilities:• In conjunction with the Chief Information Officer, developed and directed the technology strategy for campus-based technology to include staffing, CapEx and OpEx budgets, project resource planning, infrastructure upgrades, and other initiatives.• Lead a large team of technology professionals providing support to over 75 remote campuses across the United States.• Provided leadership and managed a staff of direct reports responsible for areas including systems administration, desktop support, audio-visual systems, and student-side tech support activities.• Developed key performance indicators for individual contributors as well as developed a system of metrics for measuring solution delivery and customer service in line with 4DX principles.• Managed relationships with campus leaders including Presidents/Chancellors, Deans, Department Directors, Executive Committee members, and faculty.• Traveled regularly to campus locations and performed technology service audits which included meeting with students, staff, and faculty; assessing technology delivery standards, and auditing technology solutions.• Oversaw the teams that provided support through various campus teach-out activities as some locations were sold or closed.
  • Edmc
    Director Of Campus Technology
    Edmc Jul 2017 - Oct 2017
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
  • Edmc
    Director Of Campus Technology Architecture
    Edmc Jan 2014 - Jul 2017
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
My goal as the Director of Campus Tech Architecture was to streamline, simplify, eliminate, and automate various areas of our campus-based infrastructure and classroom support processes amid a restructuring that saw a number of local campus-based IT positions being eliminated from the organization. Several of my team’s achievements and core responsibilities included:• Consolidated 52 different Windows domains into a single centralized domain. Consolidated hundreds of individual software images into two (one Mac, one PC).• Automated quarterly software updating and patching activities using Altiris and Munki solutions.• Consolidated hundreds of redundant campus based license servers into a dozen centralized license servers to reduce annual software licensing cost by several million dollars.• Oversaw the complete solution lifecycle from initial discovery and exploration to design, build, test, and launch activities.• Managed the day to day efforts of the design team including project management, training, quality testing, and continual improvements to solutions using Agile/Scrum methodologies.• Created documentation standards for design, deployment planning, hardware life-cycle, and software life-cycle for all campus-based technology solutions.
  • Brown Mackie College
    Regional Director Of Technology
Brown Mackie College May 2008 - Jan 2014
    Cincinnati, Oh, Us
Upon taking the role at Brown Mackie College at their central services office in Cincinnati, I found an IT infrastructure that had been severely neglected for several years. Partnering with the Group Vice President and President of the college system, we modernized the classroom learning spaces, overhauled the computer labs, built a first class wireless infrastructure and deployed an innovative 1:1 iPad solution for students and faculty. A few of the more noteworthy accomplishments during my time at Brown Mackie College include:• We were one of the first iPad initiatives and at the time the largest scale deployment of over 30,000 units in 28 campuses across 15 states.• We saved the students thousands of dollars on physical textbook fees and put powerful technology into the hands of everyone.• Completed a cost benefit analysis, developed a business case, and developed a project plan for deploying iPads to all students with-in a six month window of time. This included end-to-end operations starting with recruitment and enrollment through orientation and student training. Worked along side all senior college personnel to implement the required process changes in their departments.• Developed a public iTunes U site for the college to assist with enrollment and recruitment activities.• Developed and maintained an online course in iTunes U that oriented students to their new iPad and provided them with guided self-service support ‘lessons’ to help them get the most out of their devices.• Developed and implemented a next-generation technology infrastructure strategic plan for 28 remote campuses. This included staffing, system requirements, classroom software requirements, and hardware life-cycle planning.• Provided all IT installation services for over a dozen new campus startups or relocations.• Evaluated, trained, hired, and coached a team of regional technology specialists to implement and support the strategic plan of the college campuses.
  • The Art Institutes
    Associate Director Of Technology
The Art Institutes Nov 2003 - May 2008

I had the opportunity to relocate from Minnesota to sunny Florida in late 2003 where I was tasked with providing IT installation services for a new campus being built for the Art Institutes and oversee technology through their first several years of growth. A few of my major accomplishments as Associate Director of Technology included:• Oversaw the IT portion of the new facility construction, network installation, and IT system turn-up.• Managed several phases of expansion as the campus grew including addition of new computer lab space and the construction of a HD film and visual effects studio and SAN for video editing.• Provided all the day-to-day technology support including color print services, equipment checkout, and computer lab systems.
  • The Art Institutes
    Information Technology Support Supervisor
The Art Institutes Nov 2000 - Nov 2003
    Atlanta, Georgia, Us
After being promoted from a part-time student worker to a full-time computer technician, then again to Technology Support Supervisor, I was tasked with modernizing the campus’ network and classroom systems. I hired a team of technicians and with the support and guidance of the Faculty Technology Committee, we improved many of the technology solutions for students on campus including:• Rebuilt the campus network and systems architecture including deployment of Active Directory.• Upgraded all Mac lab hardware and managed the upgrade from classic Mac OS to macOS X.• Migrated the PC labs from Windows NT 4 to Windows XP and upgraded PC hardware.• Upgraded print output and equipment checkout services to provide a better student experience.
