About Dylan Dent

I am currently an Applications Engineering Intern at MKS Instruments Inc in Beaverton, Oregon, while simultaneously completing my MS in Applied Physics at the University of Oregon. My work focuses on advancing laser-based drilling tools from minimal viable products to near-commercialization, combining my academic background with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology.I have a deep passion for problem-solving and a strong interest in the fields of optics, laser-material interactions, software engineering, and energy innovation. My experience spans from conducting process development and metrology to working with advanced laser systems, including pulsed and continuous wave CO2 lasers, pico and nano UV lasers, and fiber optic lasers. I have worked with 1064nm fiber optic lasers using a fiber Bragg grating to create a laser oscillator, as well as with 1550nm fiber lasers.I am actively seeking opportunities to further apply my skills in optics, astronomy, software engineering, or mechanical engineering. My unique educational background, including a K-12 Spanish immersion program, has equipped me with a diverse skill set and a distinct perspective that I bring to every project.I look forward to connecting with professionals in the field and exploring new opportunities to contribute and grow!

As an Applications Engineering Intern, I played a key role in advancing ESI's laser-based drilling tools from a minimal viable product (MVP) to a state nearing commercialization. My work involved demonstrating the system's capabilities, pushing it to its limits, and identifying areas for refinement to ensure readiness for the market. This hands-on experience was complemented by my academic work, where I completed a master's degree in applied physics and authored three academic papers based on my internship.Key Skills and Accomplishments:- Contributed to the development and refinement of laser-based drilling tools from MVP to near-commercialization.- Extensive experience with pulsed and continuous wave CO2 lasers, as well as pico-second and nano-second UV lasers.- Conducted process development on a wide range of ESI's current and future product offerings.- Studied laser-material interactions with ultra-short pulse lasers.- Gained experience using scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) for data collection.- Performed vision-based metrology, incorporating python scripting to streamline data collection and processing.- Operated ESI's drilling tools and verified process quality using advanced imaging techniques.- Prepared and presented customer-focused slide decks internally, demonstrating the capabilities of laser drilling tools.
