Undergraduate Research AssistantPenn State University Artificial Heart Lab Aug 2008 - May 2010University Park, Pa- Conducted a personal research project that focused on blood flow through an artificial Aortic Valve (polymeric tri-leaflet valve flow visualization) which culminated in my Honors Thesis o Objective of the thesis was to determine the effect of thinning a polymeric valve’s leaflets had on blood flow through the aortic valve o Established a mock-circulatory loop under normal physiological conditions to mimic flow through the native circulatory system with which the thinned-leaflet valve could be tested in o Sampled flow rate through the polymeric valve and its surrounding sinuses at numerous data points throughout the cardiac cycle using 2-D Particle Velocimetry, which were then processed to create an overall flow rate diagram at each data point o Results showed that thinning the leaflets led to both a wider systolic jet with a lower peak velocity, and increased flow within the Sinuses of Valsalva, both of which are desirable flow traits -
Mechanical Engineering InternPhilips Respironics Jun 2009 - Aug 2009Monroeville, Pa- Worked with both mechanical and electrical engineering departments of the Home Respiratory group on a portable volume and pressure controlled life-support BiPAP ventilator (Trilogy100©) - Developed and performed experiments that tested the life-support ventilator's speakers and active exhalation valve (used to substantially improve spontaneous exhalation during the inspiratory phase) - Reliability Demonstration Testing (RDT) fan failure evaluation and rework.
