As a legal resident at the Guilford County Public Defender's Office, I assisted over a dozen attorneys with their heavy caseloads on a daily basis. I made daily appearances in court for clients to advocate for them. This included arguing pre-trial motions, presenting plea agreements, discussing cases with ADAs, etc... I also drafted motions for several attorneys to be presented in court, such as motions to dismiss, motions to suppress, motions for pretrial release, and motions for psychological evaluation. These motions required significant legal research, often regarding the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. I conducted daily interviews of clients, witnesses, and police officers to gather relevant evidence to help determine case strategies and investigate the facts of cases. I also conducted document review and assisted with pre-trial discovery for a large number of cases.

Worked with a team of four others to research and write an Amicus Curiae Brief to the United States Supreme Court in the Case Torres v. Texas Department of Public Safety. The case required in-depth research into the Eleventh Amendment and the complexities of Sovereign Immunity. In this position, I was able to use my analytical thinking skills to help create a persuasive brief strategy, and I was able to use my legal research and legal writing skills effectively to advocate for the client.
