My interests in science and adventure education emerged early in my undergraduate studies, where I was fortunate to study forest ecology, emergency medicine, wilderness trip leading, and chemistry in settings that extended beyond the classroom. Since 2012 I have been working with adolescents and adults in educational instutions that have allowed me to spend time in beautiful and challenging environments- from the high school chemistry lab to the White Mountains of New England. Through my graduate studies and in response to my students I have gravitated towards the philosphies of project-based learning, place-based learning, experiential education, and Critical Skills. I value the personal connections that form between students and teachers in the residential programs where I live and work. For me, the form and function of education in our ever changing social, political, economic, and ecological contexts is endlessly fascinating, and my developing understanding of both the flaws and potentialities of our contemporary educational system informs my path forward.
