About Dylan Mcclung

My PhD work centered around the discovery of a novel antibiotic, which I named Dynaplanin, produced by the rare actinomycete bacterium Couchioplanes caeruleus. I used a variety of analytical chemistry techniques, including HPLC-MS/MS, stable isotope labeling, and NMR to characterize the structure. I also identified the gene cluster and proposed a biosynthetic pathway for biosynthesis through whole-genome PacBio sequencing and heterologous expression. Finally, I identified the mechanism of action through whole genome re-sequencing of spontaneous resistance mutants, SNP analysis, and computational protein modeling/docking. This work was accepted for publication in mBio (April 2022).My second project's aim was to develop a microfluidic device that allowed us to perform a high-throughput screen of interspecies interactions for novel antimicrobials. I spearheaded this project predominantly on my own. I designed and tested multiple prototypes until landing on a final design. The implementation of the device is still in-progress. In my free time, I perform and communicate science as my drag persona, Dyna Cockus Rose. I've given several talks through the Science is a Drag event series (one in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and two others virtually hosted in the UK). I recently summarized my drag outreach efforts as an invited speaker for the World Microbe Forum 2021 (collaboration between ASM and FEMS). The title of my talk was "Science is a Drag: Using Cross-dressing and Pop Culture to Engage the Public." The recording of this talk is available on my YouTube channel and under Featured (below).
