As an Instrument Technician, my role revolves around ensuring that the instrumentation and control systems within our facility run smoothly and efficiently. I’m responsible for installing, calibrating, and maintaining a wide range of instruments, from temperature and pressure sensors to flow meters and analysers. Each day, I troubleshoot and repair equipment to keep everything operating at peak performance, diagnosing problems quickly and accurately, whether it’s a malfunctioning pressure transmitter or a faulty control loop.My work also involves performing regular calibrations to ensure the accuracy of measurements, which is critical for maintaining the integrity of our processes. I work closely with other teams, including engineers and operators, to identify and resolve any instrumentation issues that may arise. I’m constantly learning about new technologies and techniques in instrumentation, as this field evolves quickly.One of my key responsibilities is maintaining detailed records of all maintenance, calibration, and repair work, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. I also play a crucial role in ensuring all equipment is in top working condition to prevent downtime and support safe and efficient operations.The job can be challenging, especially when dealing with urgent breakdowns or complex issues, but it's also highly rewarding. I enjoy the variety of tasks I handle and the opportunity to make a real impact on the performance and safety of our operations

As an Apprentice Instrument Technician, I’m in the process of learning and developing my skills in the field of instrumentation and control systems. My role is a mix of hands-on work and technical training, where I support senior technicians and engineers while gaining experience in maintaining, installing, and troubleshooting instruments like pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, flow meters, and control systems.On a typical day, I assist with routine maintenance tasks, such as calibrating instruments, checking wiring, and performing basic repairs. I’ve been learning how to diagnose problems, understand electrical schematics, and use test equipment like multimeters and loop calibrators. A lot of my time is spent shadowing more experienced technicians, who teach me the ins and outs of the job, from troubleshooting faulty equipment to ensuring everything is compliant with safety standards and regulations.As an apprentice, I’m also studying the theoretical side of instrumentation, learning about different types of control systems like PLCs and DCS, and gaining an understanding of the technical principles behind the equipment I work with. My goal is to become more independent and proficient, gradually taking on more complex tasks as I gain confidence and experience.The work is challenging, but it’s also rewarding. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and develop my skills, whether it’s figuring out how to fix an issue or understanding the broader role of instrumentation in maintaining safe and efficient operations. I’m excited about where this apprenticeship will take me and the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a career in the field
