As part of my Griffith Occupational Therapy studies, I had my first block placement education at Lifestyle Therapies and Training Solutions (LTTS). Working with a NDIS case load, I have developed a great understanding of client-centred practice, the impact of person and environment factors on the client’s occupational performance and engagement, and using evidence-based practice to ensure my clients received quality up-to-date interventions. My most recent placement education at IPAR Rehabilitation allowed me to develop my understanding of interacting and engaging with clients and their key stakeholders to return to employment and other forms of re-engaging in meaningful and purposeful occupations. My experience working in this field has provided me the opportunity to develop in my time management skills, retainment of knowledge to inform practice, and effective response to feedback upon reflective practices. I have also learnt about my skills in communicating with clients, their family members, and key stakeholders which have assisted me in providing a comfortable and informative interaction that will most benefit them. As for my previous work experience, I have worked as a trade assistant and apprentice plumber for a privately owned plumbing business. Relevant to this position, I have worked efficiently in teams during jobs that were strenuous and demanding. This includes meeting deadlines, the influence of other trades and their work, meeting the client’s needs, practicing effective interpersonal communication between colleagues (electricians, carpenters, etc.) and clients both informatively and to build rapport. Reflecting on my experience at Century Battery YUASA (total of 6 months), this position provided experience of manually handling commercial batteries during factory processes within a small team. It was important for me to communicate effectively with other team members in a timely manner to ensure the efficient and paced production of batteries. These are some of the valuable skills I have gained, and my mission is to gain more knowledge and practice to provide the greatest service to people who need support. These fields expanded my knowledge of how to communicate effectively, follow policies and procedures, approach customers with professionalism, consult and negotiate with clients and fulfilling their needs appropriately. In each field of work, my experience taught me how to approach tasks with caution, reflect and evaluate on my own ability and knowledge, and how I can implement an action plan to address any gaps in my knowledge.
