As an undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) for General Chemistry 1, I am tasked with creating worksheets and exam reviews that will assist the students who are taking the course. While this position has strengthened my teaching ability, it has also shown me the other side of academics that students, like myself, don’t typically see. From the professors to the tutors, this position has shown me the importance of every level in education.

During the Fall 2023 semester, I took on the position of an undergraduate teaching assistant for two organic chemistry 1 sections. Weekly task include grading assignments and holding recitation sessions where I covered topics including: Acid-Base chemistry, Stereochemistry, Subtitution, Elimination, and Addition reactions.

During the summer of 2024, I worked in the lab of Dr. Thomas Maimone as a part of the Amgen scholars program. My project was on the development and optimization of an asymmetric [4+2] cycloadditon reaction towards the total synthesis of a polyketide natural product. During this time, I obtained ~650 hours of research experience in the area of natural product total synthesis.

In the Summer of 2022, I was selected to be apart of the NSF-REU FITS summer research program. The name of this program was the Frontiers in the Chemistry of Materials. Throughout the summer I participated in research in the Contreras lab which involved developing a detection method for RNA oxidation in response to environmental stressors. During this time I was able to amass over 400 hours of laboratory experience.
