Security Software Engineer | Group Lead | Team Lead

Rochester, New York, United States

This position exists through the Laboratory of Software Design and Productivity @ RIT, via a contract awarded by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).After working as a Software Engineering Course Assistant at RIT for several high-level SE courses, I received recommendations that greatly assisted my placement in this role. I aimed to demonstrate a strong set of development and communication skills, and was soon rewarded with becoming Group Lead for my team. My responsibilities of a Software Security Engineer expanded to include leadership of a small group, around five people. These responsibilities required me to exercise both strong organizational and time management skills, which greatly help me succeed in this role. My core philosophy for team leadership revolves around proper team communication, both internally, as well as externally with stakeholders. Under these principals, my group regularly met both weekly sprint goals, as well as monthly Scrum goals with well-produced, documented, and tested code. A document-first approach allows for the reduction of thrashing and the maximization of productivity specifically within cross-team development, as this allowed for external development teams to more easily understand our designs with little to no prior knowledge of the code. I maintained my role as a group lead for several months before being reassigned to an adjacent team that wished to duplicate the structure and results of my previous team. Shortly after my move, many team members completed their co-ops with the changing school semester, leaving me with the opportunity to take on more responsibilities for my team. This shift in structure allowed me to focus on system architecture, cross-team efforts to complete high-level objectives received directly from the Principle Investigator, and any development tasks deemed critical or time-sensitive to meet client expectations.

Software Engineering Course Assistant

Rochester, New York, United States

After earning a recommendation from my professor Kal Rabb, I was selected for the position of course assistant for the SWEN344 course at RIT. This position gave me the opportunity to act in a teaching/leadership role in the classroom, as well as greatly improved my skills as a code reviewer. My job entailed assisting the learning process within the classroom as well as grading programming assignments for the students. These tasks demanded good organizational skills, as well as time management skills. Without these skills, I would not have been able to effectively balance my own schoolwork with my responsibilities as a course assistant. The extensive amount of code review that I did helped hone both my pair programming and generic code analysis skills.
