My principal responsibility within IBERS is to contribute to the teaching and development of a Masters Degree in Sustainable and Efficient Food Production under the banner of the BBSRC funded Advanced Training Partnership (ATP). The goal of the ATP project is to develop innovative training courses tailored to the needs of the agri-food industry, ensuring businesses have the resilience required to meet future challenges of climate change and economic pressures. We are committed to the need for building resourceful production systems whilst conserving environmental services.My research focus is understanding and manipulating the meiotic DNA repair pathways that results in genetic recombination in a range of key crop species including rye, barley, and ryegrass. The aim of the research is to improve the efficiency of the introgression of agronomically important traits from diverse germplasm into commercial varieties and to improve the efficacy of marker assisted breeding.
