Appointed after university as an engineer in training, I experienced working in various engineering departments within Eskom Distribution. I gained exposure in Field Services, Project Engineering, real time network operations, metering, telecontrol, and protection. I completed various courses, among others, fire-fighting, first aid, Occupational Health and Safety, Protection, Digsilent PowerFactory (Basic, intermediate and DPL). In June 2010 I was appointed in the Network Optimisation department as a Network Analyst Engineer. My functions were to ensure the correct and safe functioning of the grid under normal and abnormal conditions. I managed outage studies, rerouting power where possible to maintain supply to customers. I completed studies analysing the impact that new projects (lines, loads, cap banks, voltage regulators, etc.) would have on the grid and make adjustments to the design if necessary. I was solely responsible for the execution and compilation of the Annual Winter Peak Load Test Report which highlighted constrained networks (thermal constraints, QoS violations, etc.) I was involved in numerous work-groups, such as the Power System Simulation work-group, of which I was the regional chairman. Other work-groups included the TIPS ("The Integrated Planning Solution" tool designed and built by NetGroup) testing panel and Base Case Maintenance Strategy. I trained the control center staff on various contingency plans and switching scenarios and network configurations. I completed fault investigations and determined if the protection operated correctly, root-cause analysis as well as load lost and impact on SAIDI/SAIFI indices.
