Hello Educators,I am seeking to apply my counseling skills and theories to students, obtained from the CACREP Accredited School Counseling program at SUNY New Paltz. Upon upcoming completion of a +600-hour internship, I will be seeking to fill a full-time school counseling position. This year was particularly difficult for school districts to transition to online learning, with student engagement and failing grades rising across the board. However, a transformed school counselor will take this as opportunity to define student needs, deliver interventions based on data, manage duties to students, as well as assess for equitable learning (ASCA National Model).In the course of my studies, I have taken particular interest in trauma, multicultural counseling, and evidence-based mindfulness practices. I believe it is vital for students to be addressed as a whole through being viewed with a trauma-informed perspective. I recognize the privileges I have and lack and attempt to operate with understanding of societal and structural obstacles standing in the ways of vulnerable populations. Lastly, mindfulness changed my life for the better. Taking a course on the practices of meditation derived from eastern-philosophy and research has prompted the desire to teach mindfulness to students to those who are interested. I currently run a weekly small group based around this attainable practice and have obtained self-reported data of its efficacy.Being responsible for about a 40-student caseload, I have experience in standard practices of this profession such as, but not limited to, referrals, 504/IEP meetings, lesson planning/delivery, tracking student data, and communicating with appropriate stakeholders. The transformed school counselor will adhere to all traditional roles and duties, but also take on ethical, equitable, and proactive approaches to students learning. Maintaining this headspace during a time when it’s needed most, mobilizes the student and the community as a whole. I understand I cannot move mountains, especially by myself.
