I study the physical evolution of landscapes. I use numerical computer models to understand how distinctive landforms emerge from the interaction between climate and the diversity of materials found at the Earth’s surface. I also use a variety of tools such as cosmogenic dating and thermochronometry to establish the pace of landscape development. Areas of specialty include glacial and fluvial geomorphology, but I also pursue research on tectonic geomorphology and on the effects of material properties (i.e., rock type) on geomorphic processes. I maintain a keen interest in escarpments developed in layered rock as natural laboratories for the study of transient landscapes. I currently perform research throughout the western United States, to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Chilean Andes.Specialties: Research in Earth Science, Geomorphology
