About Dylan Fehr

I love to talk faiths, philosophies, worldviews, cultures, rituals, histories.Though my undergrad is in philosophy, I hope to step into the world of archaeology. My dream is to work in the field. I see myself hiking long hours to collect tiny bone fragments; cataloging pottery sherds by the hundreds; comparing ornamental brooches to uncover long-lost vestiges of belief and practice; to not just read history, but to witness it.Premodern history occupies most of my watching, listening, and reading. I'm particularly attracted to histories of the Precolonial Americas and the Migration Period in Northwestern Europe. My pure fascination is with Sub-Roman Britain (5th-6th Century C.E.), but I enjoy learning about all cultures, historic or modern. When I study, I pay special attention to details: historical context, biases, suppositions, credibility, and argument structure. In the long-term, I hope to synthesize archaeological data with philosophical analysis. I see the "world" through a phenomenological lens, in which world means "the sum of one's possibilities and their projections of the future." If we are careful not to slip into speculation, we may meaningfully apply this lens to anthropology. Analysis would go beyond the surface-level beliefs of a culture, down to the underlying, precognitive dispositions that make such beliefs possible. I aspire to teach this interdisciplinary work in the future as an instructor in academia.

SingleSpeed changed the way I thought about my work.First of all, it was fast. My previous jobs had been slow and focused on making critical connections. This job was all about quick decision-making, efficient use of time, and a robust physical skillset. It was also about creating something beautiful and unique, but it was still more than that. At SingleSpeed, doing a good job meant ensuring that your work always met the same standard of quality. Surfaces are kept spotless during service, fries are dropped to order, and each station brings their food to the pass at the same time. This isn't just a service ideal, it's a warm welcome that goes further than words ever could. I now carry this professional standard with me in all the work I do.

Research Assistant

Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States

Assisting Dr. Boedeker gave me a newfound appreciation for the detail-oriented work of academic writing. While working as his teaching assistant, Dr. Boedeker also offered me a position as his research assistant. I was to help with an upcoming project on Tractarian logic. It was a philosophical paper which dealt with difficulties related to color attribution under the logical demands of Wittgenstein's "Tractatus." I proofread Dr. Boedeker's writing for accuracy. I verified references to the Tractatus. I conducted background research to get a better grasp on the conversation. Finally, the paper was accepted for publication at the 45th International Wittgenstein Symposium in Austria.

Teaching Assistant

Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States

Assistant-teaching was the opportunity of a lifetime. It showed me that I truly belong in academia.I got an email from Dr. Edgar Boedeker, one of the University of Northern Iowa's top instructors in philosophy. He needed a teaching assistant for Elementary Logic, and considered me for the role because of my "excellent work in that class and in other classes." I had already taken several of his classes, so we were already familiar with each other's working style. Because of that, we worked harmoniously together. Needless to say, this was an unparalleled work experience. Most of my responsibilities revolved around grading homework and proctoring exams for 30 first & second-year students; twice, I had the privilege to personally instruct the class while Dr. Boedeker tended to time-sensitive appointments. During those lectures, I devoted approximately 10 minutes to exams, 30 minutes to presenting new material, and 10 minutes to student questions. All other times, I worked closely with Dr. Boedeker to ensure the highest degree of accuracy and fairness in my grades. It was the most enjoyable and fulfilling work I have ever done. What once seemed like a pipe dream now felt real, attainable: I could work in academia. I could become a professor one day. For me, this opportunity dispelled all doubts about my future fitness for the task.

Retail Merchandiser

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Area

Hallmark was a great opportunity to develop my customer service and organizational skills. It also let me choose my own schedule. I never stopped going to school full time, so I needed that flexibility. I worked with Hallmark's clients, so I would start my day by checking in with store managers. After that, I would spend some time managing inventory; then, I'd move to stocking shelves, organizing fixtures, and responding to customer requests.
