I lived in Bwiam, a village in The Gambia, West Africa, connecting the people and communities there with resources, ideas, and expertise. The Gambia is a country and culture entirely different from the United States, and so on a daily basis I faced challenges of distance, scarce resources, language and cultural barriers and misunderstandings, and more. I loved it.While at post, I: - helped manufacture and install zero-carbon, zero-electricity solar bottle lighting systems in schools and residences. I worked with local carpenter Pa Demba and with support from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to scale this effort nationwide by conducting training courses for other carpenters.- assisted with systems and network maintenance at the Sulayman Junkung General Hospital, allowing their records office to keep and access consistent digital records, all while exchanging skills with my colleagues there.- helped to set up and administer Internet cafés in multiple locations in Bwiam, guiding my colleagues as they grew into the roles of maintainers and administrators. Diagnosed the root cause of failure in customer returned and evaluative semiconductor devices, typically in packaged form. Included non-destructive package inspection (x-ray, acoustic scanning, curve tracing of key pins, optical inspection, etc.), coordinating with support groups to verify how the device fails, chemical, mechanical, and plasma deconstruction of the package material to expose the die, circuit schematic and layout analysis, direct node-by-node probing to follow failing signals, and eventual deprocessing of the device itself.While this position was chiefly technical, working at TI taught me how to live and work in a large corporate environment, initially without the proximity of any friends or family. I feel this gave me the opportunity to grow not just as an engineer, but as a person.
