When I was about 5 years old, I used to be curious as to why my grandad would wake up at 3:00 in the morning to check up on his crops. At the time, it seemed a very irrational thing to do since it wouldn't be harvest season, but he would insist on going anyway. It's been just recently that I really discovered why, and today I feel that it was one of the biggest lessons learnt. When you're passionate about something and want it to succeed you give it your utmost attention and provide it with the best possible conditions. Even though my grandad could not force his crops to grow faster, he would use the best fertilizer, provide plenty of water and try to keep his crops as pest free as possible. The same analogy goes for our beloved IT industry. I try to position myself like my grandad; be there for my teams and projects, provide the best tools for growth and then take a step back and let them grow, providing guidance along the way. It is truly rewarding to see a project grow from a sketch on a paper napkin into a system. A system that has fully dedicated teams inspired to work beyond their call of duty, simply because they are empowered to do what they love and to constantly deliver a valuable product.
