As a founder at Golden Sun Technologies, I designed, developed, and sold a product that automates accounts payable document processing and information extraction with machine learning.The application improves document processing efficiency and accuracy with a 3 step process:1. Constantly monitors incoming transactions, and automatically pulls in batches of documents for processing at regular intervals2. Combines machine learning models, format-specific data extraction algorithms, and custom business rule logic to automate repetitive data-entry tasks previously done by employees3. In uncertain or accuracy-critical situations, routes automation output to employees who can validate or edit results quickly with a GUI interfaceThis development and deployment process exposed me to a multitude of new software engineering topics at a rapid pace. These included, but were not limited to, cloud computing services, REST APIs, fuzzy search algorithms, and application distribution processes (especially across different OSs). It also solidified the importance of several development paradigms whose necessity was not as obvious in my previous, smaller projects. An application of this size required more diligent upfront design, version control, a well-defined DevOps cycle, error handling and logging at scale, and thorough research into libraries and frameworks before incorporation.Between me and my co-founder, over 1200 total hours of design, development, and testing were put into the project. The implementation ultimately resulted in 3x document processing speed and a 5% increase in accuracy. It is currently used by 6 employees for 6-7 hours a day, and processes hundreds of thousands of transactions a year.
