Sometimes amazing opportunities just present themselves and this was one of those experiences. In my role at Whittaker, I worked with the leading guiding company on Mount Rainier (RMI) outfitting people for their climbs. From fitting boots to going to trade shows I was involved with every aspect of the business. Our customers were climbing any big mountain you can think of Everest, Aconcagua, Denali… I became an expert in outfitting people for these expeditions.Working at Whittaker Mountaineering led to many experiences I could have never had anywhere else. This experience and position gave me the confidence to quit my job and start my own business.Primary responsibilities included strategic planning, development of operations, business growth, talent recruitment and development, assistant buyer for an inventory of $600,000+ retail and rental fleet, management of e-commerce website among other responsibilities for a $2M/yr company.

I’m surprised Mike Rowe never did an episode about working at the rental shop. Every day during the climbing season, we would outfit upwards of 40 people for their climbs. We’d gear people up from head to toe. Boots, ice ax, crampons, and all the layers you name it. And when it came back it was dirty. So we’d clean it all up and start over the next day.It was about customer service - making sure the customer’s concerns were answered while working efficiently.The shop outfitted climbers local and for international climbs.

This summer was a crash course in management. I was as green as they come and excited for the opportunity and I thought the best way to show my competence was to do nearly everything myself. Fortunately, when I started to burnout I had an awesome team that was waiting for me to ask for help. I learned the value of communication and delegation this summer.

Outdoor education is one of the coolest fields of work that a young person can have. You spend your days outside inspiring kids to connect with nature. Many times they are from the city and never spent a day in the woods. You get to lead them on trails and explore for a week. I learned to be myself, be confident while acting a fool, and control a room of hundreds of people.

This was the first chance to see how to manage and run a department while still having an active role in the outdoor program. I also ran and staffed the Challenge and Ropes Course.

I led the first Dudley NOLS leadership program in WY. It was a hybrid program of Dudley traditions with NOLS backcountry leadership training. I took 8 boys and girls from NY to the NOLS headquarters in Lander WY and teamed up with 2 NOLS instructors.

Rock Climbing InstructorThere is something really special about pushing young people out of their comfort zones. And taking young boys rock climbing did that. I saw how they could become empowered by overcoming their fear of heights or pushing through the crux of a climb. This summer got me hooked on outdoor education and my personal drive for the outdoors.
