Profile bio

About Denis Zadymov

I am a third-year mechanical engineering student at The University of British Columbia. I bring an academic background in mechanical design & material science from UBC and over a year of co-op experience in the steelmaking and mining industry. I have an interest in heavy machinery, EAF steelmaking, mining (base metals, oil sands, diamond and potash), mining equipment/technology, mineral processing and reliability engineering.Since May 2024, I have been working as a mechanical engineering co-op student with Teck Resources in the reliability & maintenance department at the Highland Valley Copper Mine. In this role, I am leveraging predictive maintenance technologies such as oil and vibration analysis to drive continuous improvement in fixed plant reliability. Additionally, I am involved in the development of new preventive maintenance (PM) strategies, root cause analysis investigations and PM optimization to enhance overall equipment effectiveness.Prior to this, I completed an 8 month co-op position as an R&D Engineer at EVRAZ North America, a leading producer of steel products and solutions. During my tenure, I gained extensive experience working with oil country tubular goods (OCTG) and knowledge of the steelmaking, continuous casting, rolling and ERW welding process. I applied metallographic and fractographic techniques to characterize steels, conducted data analysis using Minitab, and utilized the design of experiment methodology to support various product/process development & improvement projects.I am proficient with SolidWorks, Minitab, IBM Maximo, Microsoft Office Suite (excel, power BI, word, etc) and several finite element analysis (FEA) softwares. I am always eager to learn new skills and technologies that can enhance my performance, helping me apply my knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems and create innovative solutions.

Mechanical Engineer Co-Op

Logan Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Member of the fixed plant reliability & maintenance engineering team at the Highland Valley Copper Mine. Responsibilities include developing new preventive maintenance (PM) strategies, PM optimization, root cause analysis investigations, developing engineering solutions, managing condition monitoring programs and budget development activities.Highlights:• Applied the failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA) methodology to develop and implement preventive maintenance strategies for over 180 assets across the mine site.• Interpreted condition monitoring (vibration & oil) data and created work orders in IBM Maximo to perform predictive maintenance actions when needed, reducing costs and downtime by avoiding equipment failures.• Investigated reliability issues (bad actors) by facilitating root cause analysis (RCA) sessions with the PROACT EasyRCA software in order to identify the root cause and to minimize reoccurrences through corrective actions.• Minimized the variance in weekly labor hours by optimizing preventive maintenance (PM) task start dates using Excel solver, achieving balanced resources and improved PM compliance (KPI).• Extracted weekly downtime coding (crushing & grinding) from PARCview, visualized the data & KPIs using Power BI and held meetings to present the results to production & maintenance supervisors, driving continuous improvement.• Gained safe work experience and knowledge of mill/mine operations while performing tasks like inspecting equipment, supervising contractors and driving around site (including active haul roads).

R&D Engineer Co-Op

Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

Engineering co-op student at the research & development center for an international steel company. Involved in multiple product/process development and improvement projects across various product lines, including linepipe and OCTG. Duties include collecting samples from the melt shop & rolling mill, metallographic/mechanical specimen preparation, mechanical testing, metallographic analysis, and other testing related to the project. Highlights:• Delivered a term end presentation to the EVRAZ R&D team which detailed my projects and accomplishments, winning the best student presentation award based on content, slide design, presentation skills, and question answering ability.• Applied the design of experiment (DOE) methodology to minimize the time needed to develop an optimized EVRlock EB connection design through FEA modelling in Abaqus and data analysis in Minitab, achieving a 35.5% better performing combination of make up torque and residual stress compared to the current design.• Validated FEA modelling results by experimentally measuring residual stresses through hole drilling strain gage testing and explained experimental discrepancies through Vickers microhardness testing, establishing the confidence needed to manufacture physical prototypes.• Designed specialty tooling & machine guards in SolidWorks and developed standard operating procedures (SOP) for in-house testing & specimen preparation, ensuring safe work practices and eliminating the need for outsourcing.• Utilized the design for manufacturing & assembly methodology to design ASTM complying test specimens and fixtures in SolidWorks, allowing for local CNC machining which resulted in 70% lower lead time and 40% lower machining cost.• Evaluated tolerance compliance and manufacturing quality of EVRlock connections through metallography and delivered technical reports to production managers, providing recommendations to improve product quality.
