About E Campbell

e (Ellen) Campbell, B.A. (Hons, UBC), M.A. (IGS, UBC), J.D. (Concentration in Environmental Law and Sustainability, UVic), (they/them/theirs), is a lawyer, researcher, & artist. They are a white settler/uninvited guest living on MÁLEXEȽ and Quw’utsun territories. Ellen grew up on the shores of Zhooniya Zaagiigan (Lake Simcoe) and Chi’Nibiish (Lake Ontario) in Michi Saagiig territory, and so-called Mission Creek in syilx territory. e's SSHRC-funded thesis highlighted colonialism and racism in the enforcement of international animal and conservation law by nonprofits. Their thesis included reflections on their activism in both Costa Rica and the Faroe Islands, where they also worked as a field producer on a number of video projects, including an award-winning documentary on sea turtles. They have presented at the North American Critical Animal Studies (2022, 2019), National Animal Law (2019 and 2020), Sustainable Livelihoods & Climate Change Regulation (Hanoi, Vietnam - 2019), and Building Abolition (2019) conferences. e is often asked to deliver guest lectures on the intersections between colonialism, animal law, and environmental law, and art & design.They completed their articles at the Environmental Law Centre, Ng Ariss Fong (an environmental, Aboriginal, and administrative law firm), and the Indigenous Law Research Unit. They have worked as a legal researcher for the Indigenous Law Research Unit at UVic and the Aboriginal and environmental law firm Ng Ariss Fong, a coop student for Woodward and Company; and a legal advocate at RAMA Okanagan.They have volunteered with the Trauma-Informed lawyer podcast; Knowledge Keepers of the Secwépemc Nation; and a cofounder of Radical Action with Migrants in Agriculture Isle; as a legal research assistant for the ILA Committee on the Role of International Law in Sustainable Natural Resources Management for Development; as a legal researcher for the Environmental Law Centre; as a graphic designer and animal helper with Rescue and Sanctuary for Threatened Animals; and as an editor for the University of Cambridge Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship. They are a member of the North American Association for Critical Animal Studies and the BC Animal Law Study Group. e speaks English and intermediate French, and Level 2 ASL.Their positionally as a settler/uninvited guest, queer, non-binary, neurodivergent (autism spectrum, generalized anxiety, and mixed personality disorder with features of borderline personality disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder) person informs their work significantly.

    Supported work by Indigenous peoples and communities to ascertain and articulate their own legal principles and processes to effectively respond to today’s complex challenges. I worked under the legal research director, Jessica Asch, and senior legal researchers, Tara Williamson and Simon Owen, to apply Indigenous legal research methodologies on key projects in the areas of family law, children and the law, water law, resource extraction, and environmental law. Worked in-community with Elders, Knowledge-Keepers, Language-Speakers and youth who were articulating their laws. At the direction of and assisted by community members, worked with ILRU research teams to articulate these laws in various forms, including casebooks, toolkits, learning journals, websites, and design-based formats.
