Performed design calculations, computational analysis and structural optimisation of a full-scale composite blade for a 2 MW tidal turbine. Developed the procedure for subsequent full-scale structural testing, including preliminary designs of the test setup, defining instrumentation needs and generating loading profiles within the guidelines of IEC 61400-23 (Full-scale structural testing of rotor blades).Infrastructure Manager for NUI Galway within the Marinet2 project consortium. Responsible for managing applications to the structural testing facilities and developing plans for testing campaigns with renewable energy device developers. Managed data capturing activities using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) equipment during testing campaigns, including testing for a 1.5 m diameter grid-stiffened composite cylinder for aerospace applications.Software developer for the NUI Galway BladeComp structural analysis software.

Participated in the Spring Cohort of the NSF/SFI Innovation Corps (I-Corps) programme with the BladeComp team as the Entrepreneurial Lead. BladeComp is a wind and tidal turbine blade design software that provides a faster, easier and more reliable design process. Through I-Corps our team engaged in 6 weeks of customer discovery around Ireland, Europe and the US.

Principal Investigator on a collaborative research project between industry (Ampyx Power B.V.) and academia (University of Galway), funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The project investigated suitable materials and manufacturing technologies for a multi-megawatt rigid-winged airborne wind energy system (AWES).

Wind and tidal turbines convert renewable energy in the wind and water into electricity using blades made from fibre-reinforced composite materials. This project describes an automated methodology to analyse their short and long-term structural performance. The project also combined advanced numerical tools with genetic algorithms to generate new blade designs.The project involves the application of a number of computational modelling techniques to the task of blade design, including finite element analysis (FEA), hydrodynamic blade element momentum theory (BEMT) modelling and optimisation using a genetic algorithm approach. The numerical works is validated against physical testing of small scale (15 kilowatt) fibre-reinforced composite wind turbine blades.

SIMULIA is part of Dassault Systemes, a world leading company in the production of software for 3D design solutions. SIMULIA create realistic engineering simulation software, including Abaqus/CAE.Increased the efficiency of the QC team’s daily activities by creating a new form of summary report for keeping track of the daily test results of each team member. This involved creating and refining scripts to collect and collate a variety of information from a database of results. Collaborated in the performance testing of the Abaqus software, and gained extensive experience with SIMULIA’s software testing systems.Reviewed the results of large-scale software testing daily and reran failing tests as necessary. Presented the results at a weekly meeting and presented a status update to the team monthly.

Worked with Excel and accounting software.Reconciled bank statements each month for a dozen properties.Assisted with weekly cash accounts and learned the firm’s filing system in order to participate in an audit.
