Over the last few years, I've learned that my love of science is directly tied to sparking scientific curiosity in others. Above all else, I enjoy sharing research and seeing it excite people. This intersects with my interest in restoration ecology, as effective community engagement is essential for restoration projects to thrive.I'm currently pursuing a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Environmental Science and Policy at California State University, Long Beach. Involvement in a wide range of research and coursework led me to discover a passion for scientific communication and restoration ecology, with a focus on botany. My most impactful experience has been undergraduate research in Dr. Amanda Fisher's Plant Evolution and Systematics Lab, which has shaped my knowledge of herbarium work and DNA extraction, as well as allowed me to interface with other researchers at various conferences and symposia. I've also honed in on the intersection of research and policy creation through working with Dr. Fisher on my Honors Thesis Project, which examines the demographic structure and management of Tecate cypress in the northern Santa Ana Mountains.Another pivotal experience has been working as a tutor at the University Writing Center. As part of my pedagogy training, I researched cross-disciplinary tutoring in writing centers between STEM tutees and humanities tutors. This provided me with insight into interdisciplinary communication tactics, which I've been able to utilize in my tutoring sessions and when discussing scientific findings with non-scientists. I also took the initiative to develop and present a scientific writing workshop, which has been received extremely positively by attendees. Tutoring has offered me a new perspective on writing and improved my approach to interdisciplinary collaboration.Going forward, I intend to pursue both scientific communication and restoration ecology. I'm excited to apply my wide-ranging experiences as I continue learning about these fields.
