Researching the socio-scientific impact of bus emissions on air pollution by compiling a community-science air quality dataset through a comparative study of Loyola University Chicago’s shuttle bus system. Youth Research Scholars is an engaging, STEM-based program spanning two school districts. Designed to expose youth to engineering research and scientific investigation through year-long science projects, YRS encourages the development of teamwork skills and exploring STEM career fields. Since 2020, YRS has continued its operations as an after-school program in SW Washington.

• Researched the relationship between sapling plants and natural fertilizers to determine which fertilizer options would be beneficial to a river-side habitat restoration site• Organized the methodology of our research focusing on mycorrhizal fungi and vermicompost tea to promote soil health in the delicate environments of riverbanks• Measured the effects of fertilizer application on four species and 512 saplings • Analyzed girth, height, and soil quality data collected from our saplings to determine which combinations of fungi and tea resulted in the most robust growth
